While the president has the right to award our nation’s highest commendation to anyone he chooses, I believe that its significance is cheapened when it’s handed out like ribbons at a state fair, to sports players, singers, musicians, actors, etc. For it makes me wonder, exactly what have these people done for our nation? They’ve already been rewarded with the fame and wealth they were seeking. I’d rather see genuine patriots like Gary Sinise receive this honor, for his truly unselfish service toward our wounded veterans. Unlike many of those who’ve been awarded this honor, this man has demonstrated all of the qualities of a true American hero.
